How to Prepare Yourself Before Moving Abroad

Moving abroad is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. I know because I’ve been there. I moved across the world completely alone, with no friends, family, or support.

Since then, I’ve moved cities within New Zealand, bought and sold property, and just recently moved house again. If anyone can tell you it’s going to be okay, it’s me.

The key I’ve learned is that preparation starts long before packing boxes.

1. Mentally Prepare Yourself

Before you start packing, start decluttering your mind. Moving abroad is a big change, and the more mental clutter you carry, the heavier the process feels. Take some time to reflect on what’s really important, and be honest with yourself about what’s holding you back. Letting go of the unnecessary, emotionally and practically, makes space for your next chapter.

2. Sort Awkward Financial Ties

Sort out anything that could complicate your move, such as outstanding bills, bank accounts, or financial obligations in your home country. These things are much easier to deal with in person before you leave. Starting early saves you stress and prevents surprises later.

3. Take Care of Medical and Health Needs

If you need any healthcare, dental work, or other medical procedures, get them done before you leave. Some treatments are more expensive or harder to access abroad, and having everything in order gives you peace of mind.

4. Declutter Your Life and Get Rid of Big-Ticket Items

Start reducing items you don’t really need, especially large or expensive possessions like furniture, cars, or electronics. Begin selling, donating, or giving away what you won’t take with you. Minimalism isn’t just trendy, it makes moving easier, faster, and less stressful.

Pro tip: I live by the 90-90 rule, if you haven’t used something in 90 days, and won’t in the next 90, it’s time to let it go. This approach can save you money, time, and energy when preparing for a big move.

Start Planning Early

Give yourself at least six months to a year to plan, declutter, and prepare. Start thinking ahead about what’s essential for your new life abroad. The more you plan, the smoother the transition will feel.

Ready to Take the Leap?

Moving abroad for work can feel daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. If you’re considering relocating to New Zealand or Australia to work in tech, I can guide you through the process.

With my experience moving countries, cities, and houses, I know what it takes to make the transition manageable and even exciting.
